Three other former ministers under President Muhammadu Buhari are also under investigation for a graft estimated at N150 billion. Okwete, cooperating with investigators, was arrested four days ago and may implicate Umar-Farouk and directors-general in the alleged N37 billion fraud. EFCC Investigation Unveils Alleged Graft Scandal Involving Former Ministers and Contractor
A recent report has surfaced, shedding light on a major investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Nigeria. A top EFCC official has revealed that the probe involves former Minister Sadiya Umar-Farouk and directors-general of the ministry, alongside three other ex-ministers who served under former President Muhammadu Buhari. The investigation, estimated at a staggering N150 billion graft, is linked to alleged financial misappropriation, implicating the accused individuals.
1. Extensive Investigation: The EFCC official disclosed that the contractor, Mr. Okwete, who is currently in custody, has been cooperating with investigators. The revelations made by Okwete have led to the expansion of the probe beyond Umar-Farouk, including three additional former ministers.
2. Multibillion Naira Transfer: Documents obtained during the investigation uncovered that a substantial sum of N37.1 billion was transferred from the Federal Government's coffers to 38 different bank accounts. These accounts, connected to Okwete, were domiciled in five legacy commercial banks.
3. Contractor's Arrest: Okwete, the contractor allegedly involved in laundering the money, was arrested four days ago. According to sources, he has provided detailed information that implicates Umar-Farouk and former directors-general of the ministry in the financial misappropriation.
4. Luxury Purchases and Government Contracts: The investigation has exposed Okwete's utilization of the funds, including transfers to Bureau De Change Operators, cash withdrawals, luxury car purchases, and the acquisition of choice properties in Abuja and Enugu State. Furthermore, Okwete is linked to 53 companies, with 47 of them securing Federal Government contracts totaling N27.4 billion.
5. Association with 143 Bank Accounts: Okwete's association with 143 bank accounts in 12 commercial banks has raised concerns. The Corporate Affairs Commission revealed that he is a director in only 11 of the 53 companies, while the remaining 42 companies' accounts are linked to his Bank Verification Number.
6. Ministry's Role: The report highlights the significance of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, which oversees eight agencies. Umar-Farouq, the pioneer Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, is at the center of the investigation.
The unfolding EFCC investigation is exposing a complex web of financial irregularities involving former ministers, a government contractor, and alleged graft amounting to N150 billion. As the probe continues, more details are expected to emerge, potentially leading to further arrests and legal actions. The scandal underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in government initiatives, especially in critical sectors such as humanitarian affairs and social development.
